No appointments are necessary. Participants will be able to learn about the prevention and early detection of oral cancer, as well as receive information about free support services.
The Oral Cancer Consortium (OCC), The Hudson County Cancer Coalition, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, United Way of Hudson County, and UMDNJ New Jersey Dental School are sponsors of the event. For more information, call (201) 418-2238.
Approximately 35,000 people in the United States will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year. The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development. Oral cancer is particularly dangerous because in its early stages it may not be noticed by the patient, as it can frequently prosper without producing pain or symptoms they might readily recognize, thus making an annual screening for oral cancer very important. In between screenings, you should always contact your doctor or dentist immediately if you notice the following symptoms in yourself or a loved one:
* A sore or lesion in the mouth that does not heal within two weeks. * A lump or thickening in the cheek. * A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth. * A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat. * Difficulty chewing or swallowing. * Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue. * Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth. * Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable.
