Hoboken University Medical Center Names New COO
Hospital authority selects Spiros Hatiras, seasoned health care professional,
to head hospital

HOBOKEN, NJ, March 25, 2009 — The Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority has named Spiros Hatiras chief operating officer of Hoboken University Medical Center.

An experienced health care professional and vice president of administration at the hospital, Hatiras will assume his new role immediately. Later this year, pending contract negotiations, he will succeed current Chief Executive Officer Harvey Holzberg, who will retire as planned after three years of service to the Hoboken hospital.

As a vice president, the Jersey City resident has been responsible for managing the construction of Hoboken UMC’s new Emergency Department. He also recently instituted a new room service program to improve amenities for patients and oversaw several other major initiatives including key upgrades in the Radiology Department to accommodate high-definition MRIs, digital mammography and a new PAC system (Picture Archiving and Communication) to respond even more quickly to patients medical needs.

“Spiros is a seasoned health care executive who will continue to focus on quality improvement at the hospital,” said James Caulfield, chair of the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority. “The construction of our new Emergency Department has proceeded on time and on budget under his management. We look forward to his leadership during what we anticipate will be a period of growth for Hoboken University Medical Center.”

A native of Greece, Hatiras holds a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Athens Institute of Technology and a master’s in health care management from New York University. He is also a board certified fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), an international professional society of health care executives who lead hospitals, health care systems and other health care organizations.

He joined the staff of St. Mary Hospital, the precursor to Hoboken UMC, as a physical therapist. His obvious leadership abilities led to a series of promotions as he quickly rose through the ranks to management. While at St. Mary, Hatiras served as manager and then corporate director of rehabilitation services. Major accomplishments during his tenure included doubling admissions to achieve 100 percent capacity and developing an innovative Joint Replacement Institute incorporating complementary medicine techniques.

The hospital administrator’s responsibilities continued to expand and by 2000 Hatiras was the head administrator for the laboratory, cardiology, respiratory and radiology departments as well as dietary, transportation, facilities and security. Later named vice president of post acute, ancillary and support services for the health system, Hatiras was a driving force in establishing Hoboken University Medical Center as a municipal hospital authority.

His business plans for the hospital includes opening the new Emergency Department and improving service to patients and physicians.

“My goal for Hoboken University Medical Center is to be the best community hospital in Hudson County,” Hatiras said. “We’re going to be the hospital in Hudson County that does everything well. Hoboken University Medical Center will be the place to go for superior health care.”

A resident of Jersey City for 20 years, Hatiras is married to Gwen Hatiras. The couple has two children, Ava, 13, and Zach, 10.
